SDF or silver diamine fluoride is a antibacterial liquid that helps prevent tooth cavities (also known as caries) from forming, expanding, or spreading to adjacent teeth.SDF is most commonly used for young, uncooperative, special needs, or medically compromised patients who are not able to tolerate traditional dental treatment such as fillings and crowns. Silver diamine fluoride is also a great cost effective option for families without dental insurance. To gain the benefits of SDF two direct applications to the affected teeth are usually required. Board certified pediatric dentists at Pumpkin Pediatric Dentistry in Fairfax, VA, can determine if your child can benefit from SDF treatment.

It’s most commonly indicated for young children with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). It’s also a great non-invasive choice for people who can’t fully cooperate during treatment, such as children with special needs, severe medical history, and the elderly patients.
How is SDF applied?
There is a simple procedure for the application SDF:
The affected tooth is cleaned and dried .
Vaseline, gauze or a cotton roll is placed as a protective barrier to prevent staining of adjacent teeth, cheeks and gums
SDF is applied to the cavity on the tooth for at least 1minute with a brush or floss.
Fluoride vitamins are placed over the treated tooth to allow SDF to continue to work.
Patients should return to the dentist one to two weeks after the initial treatment to ensure that the SDF is working properly.
